Dear friends,
Warm greetings from Amity! Since my colleague Ms. She Hongyu is on a business
trip to Germany, I am temporally responsible for updating our recent earthquake
relief work to you.
It is now five weeks after the earthquake hit Sichuan on May 12, 2008. The
latest report from China Ministry of Civil Affairs: death toll: 69,180, missing:
17,406, wounded 374,008( as of June 19, 2008) .
The supplies raised by "New Hump" Campaign from enterprises and individuals by
Shanghai NGOs had already been distributed to the victims in four
townships/district of Main Yang and Main Zhu city. The supplies include plastic
sheeting, tent, clothes, shoes, medicines, disinfector, baby skin-care-wipes ,
mosquito repellent and etc.
Before Ms. Liu Lin came back to Nanjing on June 12 after finishing her duties,
another Amity staff, Mr. Gong Sheng, flew to Chengdu for the earthquake relief
work on June 10. He is a team member of Amity’s Emergency Relief and
Rehabilitation Program. His main responsibility is accompanying some of Amity’s
partners and friends to visit the earthquake affected area to help them get to
know Amity’s work in earthquake relief as well as further needs assessment.
On June 12, Amity started a “Love, Strength and Hope” photograph exhibition both
in Nanjing Library and Avant-guard Bookstore, which will last for around one
month. All the photographs were taken by Amity staff and volunteers.
Amity also held a monthly memorial event for earthquake victims in the
Avantguard Bookstore on June 12. During the event the Amity staff and volunteers
showed some of the photographs and explained the story behind the photographs.
They also shared their experience and thoughts. Mr.Qiu Zhonghui, General
Secretary also reported on Amity’s relief work recently and the overall plan for
the next phase. A total of 77 children's paintings collected by Amity staff from
the temporary school held by Amity staff and volunteers in Mianzhu are also on
exhibition and for sale. The funds from selling the paintings will be used for
Sichuan earthquake relief work.
With kind regards,
Ms. Ling Chunxiang
